The Urology Residency program at Upstate Medical University is a 5-year program of progressive education and responsibility. The goal of the program is to develop the highest possible level of clinical expertise and to thoroughly prepare residents for the challenge of urological practice. A hallmark of Upstate Medical’s program is its emphasis on research. We believe this provides a distinct advantage in both academic careers and private practice.

The program has a total complement of 15 residents and admits 3 new residents each year. The applicant must complete eight months General Surgery training at Upstate Medical University during their PGY-1 year.

The medical facilities in Syracuse serve a 21 county area as a major referral center and thus draws patients from the entire region as well as the population of the metropolitan area.

Local urology rotations are done primarily at University Hospital and Community Campus, Crouse Hospital, and Veteran's Administration Medical Center. University Hospital along with the Community Campus is a 700+ bed facility which is staffed entirely by College of Medicine full-time and clinical faculty. It also houses office, out-patient, teaching, and research facilities. Crouse Hospital, a private 625-bed facility, is a major affiliate of SUNY Upstate Medical University.

Close collaboration with nearby health facilities is ongoing. A balanced experience is offered in the community hospital setting as well as in the tertiary care programs of our University Hospital.
