Global Health Emergency Medicine and Global Health Pediatric Fellowship

Overview

The Emergency Medicine and Global Health Fellowship is jointly supported by Maseno University School of Medicine (MUSOM) and Upstate Medical University (UMU) will provide an opportunity to gain valuable clinical exposure across two academic health systems in a bidirectional partnership.  Core knowledge in tropical medicine and global health will be obtained through attainment of competencies identified by the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) Competency Subcommittee.  Opportunities for mentorship and leadership will exist in program development, quality improvement (QI) work and research opportunities as they align with the fellow's career pursuits.

Clinical

The Global Health Emergency Medicine and Global Health Pediatric fellow will do the following:

• Spend up to 6 months of clinical service and education engagement in Kenya, based at Jaramogi Ogainga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) under the supervision of Upstate global health faculty and Dr. Walter Otieno, Chair of Pediatrics at Maseno University School of Medicine in Kisumu, Kenya.
• Engagement in bidirectional education platform.
• 6 months of clinical service in Syracuse, depending on residency training and background (Emergency Medicine vs Pediatrics).
• One of three educational track options:
  • 1 year fellowship plus completion of the University of Minnesota Online Global Health Curriculum and American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene CTropMed examination.  Includes 2 weeks of in-person global health training in Minnesota.
  • 1 year fellowship plus earning Certificate of Advanced Study in Public Health (CASPH) from Upstate Public Health Program.
  • 2 year fellowship plus earning Masters in Public Health (MPH) through Upstate Public Health Program.

 Research

The Global Health Emergency Medicine and Global Health Pediatric fellow will design and complete a research project leading to a manuscript submitted to a peer-reviewed journal.

 

Teaching

The Global Health Emergency Medicine and Global Health Pediatric Fellow will do the following:

• Work as an attending physician at Upstate University Hospital, a level 1 trauma center with greater than 60,000 annual emergency department visits.
• Give at least one didactic lecture to the 33 Emergency Medicine residents.

 Admission Requirements

• Current CV
• Three letters of recommendation
• Personal statement
• Graduate of US Emergency Medicine or Pediatric Residency
• NYS medical license
